TIPS FOR STAYING SANE ON ROAD TRIPS
Can you think of anything more stressful than sitting in traffic with your kids screaming, "I'm hungry, I'm bored, I need to go to the bathroom!" At this point you would rather throw yourself out of your car window under the speeding truck driving next to you! Yes, there have been times I have thought of this! Here are some ways to SAVE YOUR SANITY!
- Snacks, Snacks and more Snacks! Keep their mouths moving so they don't have time to whine or cry.
- Boredom Busters- Give each child a backpack to fill with any of the toys and books they want to bring. Chances are if they choose it, they will want to play with it.
- Gifts- Who ever said bribery doesn't work? Save some small gifts from the dollar store for meltdown mode. When you see a meltdown starting, whip out a new toy for them to keep them busy for at least the next 5 minutes. Hey, 5 minutes is a lifetime when you are on a long car ride with a difficult kid!
- Special Travel Toys- Let them know you have some special car toys for them, BUT don't give them up until after they've taken a nap! Chances are they will take a nap willingly if they know they have a special travel toy when they wake up. Dollar stores or the Target dollar section.
- DVD Player- Need I say more, PRICELESS!!!!!!
- Beverage cooler- Even if this makes them have to use the bathroom, nothing is worse than not having a juice box and hearing your kid scream over and over, "I'm THIRSTY!"
- Portable potty- Don't you hate it when your child says, "Mom I have to go NOW!" And you reply, "Why do you always tell me at the last minute?" With a portable potty you won't have to drive like a lunatic to find a disgusting, filthy, dirty public restroom.
- Hand sanitizer, first aid kit, AAA card, fully charged cell phone, magazines, maps/navigation system, camera.
TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND ADMIT THEIR WILL BE BUMPS IN THE ROAD, BUT TRY YOUR BEST TO KEEP YOUR PATIENCE AND REMEMBER THAT THESE ARE MEMORIES THE KIDS WILL CHERISH FOREVER!
